Child of Wonder is the thirty-eighth episode of Say Goodbye to America: Scatter and the sixth episode of Season 4, as well as the midseason premiere
Synopsis[]
Noah shares his darkest secret with Copper, Eliana and Tommard. Kendall's pregnancy proves to be too much for some to handle. Lewis leads a group out West for more supplies
Child of Wonder[]
Inside the cells of the O’Connor Compound, George stares down Hazel, who still stares at him with her eyebrows lowered
George: Look, I get that you might not trust me, but they know I tried to kill Ned. Zeke is dead. Asher too. Salvatore is right behind the door… I knock three times, he opens it, and we get out of here. Do with me what you will then, but we get out. I never wanted a war but you’re innocent in this
Vazquez: You brought us here to eat us. Why would we keep you alive?
Hazel: Why are we talking to you?
Aaron: Hold on. If there’s even a slim chance that we can get out of here, I say we take it. I just want one more day, that’s it. And Phillip owes me a drink, so I would like to get back to Apex
Aaron turns his attention back to George
Aaron: But if you are lying, I will kill you myself and then let them have a go at you. You will die twelve times over
George: I promise you I am being honest
Aaron: Then I take your word. Do you all?
Vazquez: I trust you, Aaron. If you trust him, for now anyway, then I agree
George turns and knocks three times on the door. The door opens and Salvatore peers slightly through the gap
Salvatore: You ready?
George: All set
Salvatore ushers George outside and to the left as the door is kicked in. Hazel gasps, Vazquez winces and Aaron’s eyes widen as Julia, Copper, Rangel, Tommard and Ozzy click the safety off their rifles and fire into the group inside the cells. When the four only hear clicks from their guns, several other Compound survivors rush in to drag the bodies, with the sound of knife squelches reaching George’s ears as he shudders and the light refracts off the tears in his one good eye. He wipes them away as he turns to Noah
George: So we’re even? I did this for you and I get to live?
Noah puts his hand on George’s shoulder, which flinches away at the touch but eventually relents
Noah: Of course, George. Now we’re even
George gives a half-hearted chuckle along with Noah. Suddenly, Noah shoves a small knife up George’s throat and under his jaw. He struggles and gurgles the blood in his mouth as his hands grab his throat.
Noah: But Dave and Ned did not. And now you are even with them
Noah pulls the knife from George’s throat and lets them one-eyed man drop
Noah: You want his mask?
Salvatore: There’s a line I will not cross and that’s it
Noah: Suit yourself. Petey, want him?
Petey: Can I do a fun dance when I jump out?
Noah: >staring disapprovingly< No… That detracts from it all
Petey: Fine. I’ll wear him and not do a fun dance
Petey drags George’s body away as Noah turns towards Copper and Tommard
Noah: When we leave Apex, you two head straight back here. I will be a little late and I will need a lot of supplies. Food, water, blankets and medicine. And real food. Convince Eliana to slaughter one of the cows for me.
Copper: Will do. Where are you heading?
Noah: Lincoln

A sedan pulls up in front of Elizabeth’s house. The driver steps out and opens the door behind her, pulling out a cane. As she walks to the front passenger side, the door swings open. Richard Harris swings his leg out and tries to lift himself out of the car
Richard: I’ve got it, Janet. I can do this myself
Janet: I still think it’s too soon
Richard: Those bastards at the compound haven’t come our way in a few months now. Or something along those lines
Janet: I told you a calendar would be helpful.
Richard: I know you did. Now, please stop being snarky and help me out of this car
Janet helps Richard out of the car and the pair enter Elizabeth’s house. They could hear the panic in abundance before they even opened the door. Phillip runs around with a damp towel; Taylor carries a heavy medical bag and Tess sorts through cabinets.
Richard: Oh yes. You can tell the baby is on its way
Richard makes his way down the hallway to the rest of the group. Elizabeth, Jenny, Horatio, and Dex surround Kendall, assisting in any way they can, as she is ready to give birth
Richard: How far along is she dilated
Elizabeth: Only two more centimeters since we called. Her water only broke seven hours ago
Richard: She might only be halfway there then. We might want coffee; this could take a while
Kendall grunts in pain as another contraction starts
Richard: Well… maybe a little shorter than I thought. Let me just wash my hands and I’ll be right over
Phillip: Anything you need from me
Richard: Elizabeth’s made good work of you with these towels. This is the first pregnancy I’ve seen since the world ended; I don’t know how helpful I’ll be. Any oxytocin?
Elizabeth: None. We’ve never found any on runs
Richard: Misoprostol?
Phillip: None here either
Dex: Any ideas as to how to relieve pain?
Richard: Primarily a mind game. Medieval societies used prayer; try that
Dex: I’ve never been religious
Richard: There’s probably a bible somewhere nearby. Get the kids on the stoop to look
Dex runs outside to the group from Appalachian State
Dex: Any of you carry a bible by any chance?
Roger: Yes… why?
Dex: Can you get it?
Andrew: Do you really think that’ll help her give birth, Dex?
Dex: I think it’s bullshit, but the doctor’s smart
Roger: I’ll go get it
Dex: Thank you
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sylvester: We’re farther out than we need to be. Chester just wanted us to scope the area and check for any sign of them
Nate: It’s been over a month or so. They were winning; they wouldn’t just give up
Hacky Sack: Yeah, and I’ll be honest, I have no idea why Haynes sent me out here, too. I’m not much of a fighter… I just cook mediocre food. I personally wouldn’t mind going home, now. The dead could be anywhere
Sean: And so could those bastards from the Compound. They took Basil and Cole… then they killed one of yours, Nate. Then the outpost and then our homes. >voice breaking< They cut their faces off… they ATE them.
Train: That won’t go unanswered
Sylvester: They’re still people
Train: They’re worse than the dead. And we’ll kill them like the dead. I’m willing to go a little farther
Hacky Sack: You just wanna keep going until you kill one of them
Train: You’re not wrong
Sylvester: All this time I’ve known you, Train, you’ve never been this vocal about anything. Why now. Is it because you’re afraid? Because we all are
Train: I’m not afraid
Nate: Then what are you?
Train: I’m… I’m lost. Aaron, Cole, Fish, Gavin… they were some of the best of us… and yeah, we lost Warren, and Rueben, and Otis, but that was before all of this. Aaron, Cole, Fish, Gavin, they were some of the best people I’ve ever met and… and the people from the compound just took ‘em away. >sniffles< Will anything they ever did matter? These people are dangerous, and I could die as easily as the others, but I haven’t done anything worthwhile yet. I’m not as strong as Cole, as friendly as Fish, as level-headed as Aaron, or as ambitious as Gavin. Will I matter?
Sean:... You do matter, Train. You’re stronger than you know
Sean chuckles a bit
Sean: And there’s a few of the dead waiting for you to prove that
The group comes across a small number of the dead. Train takes out his knife and stabs two quickly in the head before moving so Nate can take a few more down. As the other four kill the biters, Hacky Sack is slow to take out his knife, but is able to take it out and stab one before he is tackled by another. He is able to push it off enough to take out his gun and shoot it twice. He slides the dead one off
Train: That’s gonna draw more. C’mon, let’s go this way
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Copper: Another trip to Lincoln?
Noah closes up the bed to his truck and sighs. He looks towards Copper
Noah: Yeah, actually. I could use some help. Eliana, Tommard, and Cassandra are coming along to help with the supplies, and I’ve got two more for guard, but another set of hands could be helpful, if you don’t mind
Copper: Of course I’ll help. Always wondered about Lincoln. You’re back too early to be in Nebraska, so Lincoln’s gotta be code
Noah: Knock it off and get your car, man
Copper laughs as he heads towards his. Noah walks up to Cassandra and Eliana
Noah: Slaughtered today?
Eliana: From yesterday. Packer had to take care of the meat today, but it’s still a good cut
Noah: Should be fine. At least the weather is kind
Eliana walks out to the truck and places a cooler in the bed before hopping into Copper’s car
Cassandra: I’m surprised you’re letting people come along with you for once, especially me
Noah: Well… I mean… you did insist that I be more open with folks here. I might not tell everybody, but I don’t mind my closest friends
Cassandra: I don’t see Dave or Ned here
Noah: That’s why I said closest friends
Cassandra: Oof… he’s not gonna like that
Noah: He doesn’t have to know
Cassandra: He already does. I invited him along
Noah: … Please tell me you are lying
Cassandra: No, I’m not. He’s coming with us
Noah: Probably to make sure you’re safe
Cassandra: I can take care of myself
With that, she storms off to Copper’s car. She argues shortly with Eliana, who exits the car and walks over to Noah
Eliana: You really are stupid sometimes. >sighs< I’m riding shotgun. Tommard can ride in the bed
Noah’s eyes push up against his brow and he sticks his tongue on a few of his upper teeth as Eliana walks away. He sighs and closes his mouth before heading towards the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, in Apex, Roger and Andrew run towards the large house in the corner
Andrew: Did she look ready to pop when she came in today?
Roger: Do you really think I notice things like that? That’s more up your alley
Andrew: >chuckles< I don’t care about anything below the chest, Rog. Unless it’s between the legs
He makes a vulgar gesture, which is ignored by Roger
Roger: You are nasty. You and J.D. Why do I have to share a room with him?
Andrew: Francis wants to bond, so we share a room
Roger: Is it working?
Andrew: I’m starting to like him, like, 3% more each day
Roger: Progress. You got any water bottles in your room to get Kendall?
Andrew: Of course. I’ll get some
The pair enter the house and run quickly up the stairs. Roger goes to grab the Bible from his room, but finds the door shut. He brushes this off and enters. Inside, J.D., startled, shifts to grab a pillow to cover himself. Roger notices another person grab the sheets of the bed to cover herself
Roger: What the hell is going on here?
J.D.: Rog! It’s not what you think?
Roger: Are you having sex with Hannah?
J.D.: It’s exactly what you think then
Hannah: Don’t tell him!
J.D.: He just saw everything; what am I gonna say?
Roger: I just need the Bible in my nightstand and I’ll go
J.D.: Yeah, I get it, premarital sex is bad in your religion; you don’t need the Bible
Roger: It’s not for that. I just need it quickly before Andrew comes in and sees you. You won’t live it down
Andrew: Too late, Rog. Way to go, Eisbach!
Hannah: Just give him the Bible so they can leave
J.D.: Fine
Roger enters, opens the top drawer and grabs the Bible. He and Andrew leave the room, shutting the door behind them
Roger: How long has that been going on?
Andrew: No clue, why?
Roger: What if it started before the dead started walking?
Andrew: Good for him, then
Roger: Not good. Highly unethical, a professor sleeping with her student
Andrew: It doesn’t matter much now. Those ethics have been swapped for new ones. Let’s just bring these to the infirmary. I’m starting to get jealous
The pair exit the house, unaware another person had been listening to their whole conversation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Noah: We’ve arrived
Noah’s truck and Copper’s car pull up to a house alone in a clearing. The sun has begun to set and the moon, in a crescent shape, is ready to rise. Behind the house is a cliff, which drops straight into the ocean, with its waves beginning to pick up. An older man steps out, wiping his hands on an old dirty towel. Copper and Tommard look at each other puzzlingly while Noah moves towards the old man
“Is that the littlest Roosevelt heading towards me? How long has it been?
Noah: Grandpa Lincoln, you haven’t aged a week
Lincoln: The saying is ‘a day’, my boy
Noah: You’ve aged some though
Lincoln: You can cut your old fart of a grandfather some slack on that one. The 60s, 70s, 80s… they were not kind to me
Noah: Grandma said you were never too kind to them either
Noah and Lincoln embrace in a hug
Lincoln: Don’t go breaking anything now. Not a whole lot of help nowadays
Noah: You can always come with me and live in the compound
Lincoln: Your grandmother and I did that in the 60s and we were a lot stupider then than I am now. That kind of living doesn’t support a family, remember that when you have one of your own. You gonna finally introduce me to your friends?
Noah: Sorry, this is Copper, Tommard, Eliana, Dave and Cassandra. The other two are gonna stay by the car and keep an eye out for us
Lincoln: It is a pleasure to meet all of you. Name’s Lincoln Monroe Roosevelt, and yes, named for the presidents. Come inside, I’ll make you all something to eat
Lincoln heads into his house while the rest stand outside, looking at Noah
Dave: This is Lincoln? This is why you were taking supplies and food for months on end?
Noah: He’s my grandfather. No one else is around to help him
Dave: Did you not see the spikes lining the front gate? I think he can help himself
Noah: I’m just worried. That’s all
Lincoln: Are you all coming in or what? And are you staying the night?
Noah: Would take too long to get back and we need some gas anyway
Lincoln: I’ll set up some cots
The rest of the group enters Lincoln’s house. Once they enter, a short border collie jumps at Eliana
Lincoln: That’s just Lonnie. He’s harmless. In case any of the dead get too close, he always alerts me. Just pat him softly on the head and he’ll sit. Come on into the kitchen, I’ll have some food ready for you
The group heads into the kitchen. Meanwhile, the group from Apex enters a house in the middle of a clearing with a barn near the field
Sean: Should be empty
Sylvester: Can never be certain
He taps on the wood four times
Train: I’ll keep first watch
Hacky: You sure? It’s been a long day
Train: Do you want it?
Hacky: Not particularly, no
Sean: I don’t hear anything in there
Sylvester: Okay. Sweep each room before you choose a spot. Train, keep an eye out for us, but please stay inside when you do so
Inside Roger and Andrew’s house in Apex, the pair have returned from the infirmary
Becky: How’s Kendall?
Roger: I didn’t look, but she sounded okay. Maybe
Becky: Weren’t you pre-med?
Roger: Law, but thanks for remembering
Becky: Sorry. We need to talk about J.D. and Professor Thompson
Andrew: What about them?
Becky: I’ve been here all day. I know what happened
Andrew: And…? So what? It’s just two people
Becky: She’s twice his age! And his professor
Andrew: Not anymore. We’re all just survivors
Becky: It’s inappropriate
Roger: What do you plan on doing? Do you think she should move somewhere else?
Becky: Probably
Roger: That’s not fair. It’s not your call
Becky: It should be all of our calls
Andrew: It’s their relationship. Let them be
The pair walk away from Becky, who sulks down on the couch. Inside Ned O’Connor’s office, Ozzy and Tara read out a report to him. All he focuses on is the high-pitched ringing in his ears and he slams his fist down in rage
Ned: We need food. The livestock won’t cut it.
Ozzy: I keep saying we should keep searching for them
Ned: Noah is off with a few of our top guys with Lincoln again
Ozzy: We don’t need Noah. Nor Copper, Tommard, Dave
Ned: What do you suggest?
Ozzy: How many do you need?
Ned: To suffice? Maybe two of them. We still have two cells filled
Ozzy: So I’ll take a group
Ned: You leading?
Tara: It worked well last time. And I’ll go with him as well
Ned: So who would you take?
Ozzy: Besides us two, Brett, Amelia, and Derek. We’d leave in the morning
Ned: Crack of dawn. That’ll work
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lewis: Look, when that baby is born, we’re gonna need some supplies. Diapers, formula, blankets. All I’m asking is that we leave in the morning
Jenny: Who would you take?
Lewis: Whoever wanted to come. Nick is already on board. And I spoke with Roger. He wants to help pull his weight in ways other than killing
Dex: I’ll come as well. I can drive with a couple others if need be
Jenny: Fine. But don’t go too far. Be back in a day. We don’t know where the Compound people may be
Lewis: It’s why I’m gonna ask one of the soldiers to come too
Jenny: Be quick with it. They’re all set in two houses
Lewis and Dex run outside Elizabeth’s house. Inside, Kendall continues to scream in pain, which is nearly drowned out by the sounds of voices shouting ‘push’. Lewis and Dex knock on one of the doors
Gutierrez: What can I do for you?
Lewis: We need supplies for the baby
Gutierrez: Baby?
Dex: Kendall’s in labor
Gutierrez: So why come to me?
Lewis: We need to go find some supplies but we don’t know where the compound people are. We think, with your expertise, you could help us with tracking or tell us how to be careful
Cobalt: I can come. I can track and I’ll know what you’re looking for
Lewis: Thanks. We’re leaving very early
Cobalt: Why not now? Or in about an hour?
Dex: Will you be ready?
Cobalt: I’m ready now. I’ll just wait until you all are
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lincoln: And that was back in ‘64. We didn’t know what shit was going on, but it wasn’t pretty. And then we heard him speak. He spoke so eloquently. And later I found out it was all off the cuff. I wish I got to meet him in person
Tommard: Any other famous people you almost met?
Lincoln: President Johnson was one of them. And Nixon, but I got to meet him. He was all right but he smelled a little
Tommard: He looked like he didn’t smell nice
Cassandra: Could you not talk about that? I’m trying to eat here
Dave: These tomatoes are so good, Lincoln
Lincoln: Grown them the same way for thirty years
Dave: Bigger than you expect
Lincoln: That’s what made them so good. And the dead stay out of the greenhouse, so I never have to worry about that
Dave: Not worried the crashing waves draw them near?
Lincoln: Oh they do. Most nights. But the gate holds and I clear them in the morning. There’s not a lot unless some loud noise draws them near
Dave: Like that gunshot we heard along the way?
Lincoln: What gunshot?
Noah: Probably just one running from a few of them. Didn’t hear anymore so it’s probably fine
Lincoln: No it’s not. There’s been an increase in the past week and a half. They’ve been getting closer and closer, more and more of them. Pack your things. You need to leave
Lincoln walks over to a closet and pulls out a pump action shotgun and grabs an open box from the top shelf. He starts to load it while Noah stands up from his chair and walks over to him
Noah: I’m not leaving you here, Grandad.
Lincoln: I’ll be fine. Just visit in a month and you’ll see. Now. You all must leave
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard: Push! Push, you’ve got this
Taylor: The baby is almost out
Kendall pushes hard one final time and the baby is born. Janet gives Richard a soft blanket and Richard cradles the baby, which, after a few seconds, begins crying. Everyone in the room begins to smile
Richard: A heavy one. Who has something to cut the cord
Horatio: I’ll wash it off now
Richard: Be quick
Horatio runs off to wash some clamps and Kendall looks at Elizabeth and Taylor
Kendall: >weakly< Boy or girl
Taylor: It’s a boy. Any idea for a name?
Kendall: Of course. Bentley
Taylor holds Kendall’s hand as Kendall lays back down on the pillow
Taylor: Kendall… your hands are very clammy. Are you all right?
Richard looks up at the pair and hands the baby off to Elizabeth and Horatio, who cuts the cord
Richard: Do you feel alright?
Kendall: I think I might throw up
Richard’s eyes widen and he rushes back to his chair. He looks at Kendall then looks back at the others
Richard: Do you have any Pitocin?
Elizabeth: No… why?
Richard: She’s hemorrhaging
Phillip: Can you stop it?
Richard: Not without medicine. The placenta is out and I don’t see any pieces still in there. Does she have any blood conditions?
Elizabeth: No. I asked months ago
Richard: Get her blood or oxygen NOW! We need to stop this before it’s too late
Taylor hands the baby to Kendall, who is slowly losing consciousness, as the others run around Elizabeth’s house searching for medication. Richard tries to keep Kendall’s focus but her heart rate continues to increase. His words have no effect on her
Richard: Kendall. Kendall! What is your blood type?
Meanwhile, back at Lincoln’s, Noah and the other survivors head towards their vehicles. Dave, Copper, Eliana, and Cassandra start up Copper’s car and leave. Noah tosses his keys to Tommard
Noah: Take my truck
Tommard: What about you?
Noah: If you think I will let him stay by himself, you are sorely mistaken. Just come back for me in a few days
Tommard: And what if you are gone?
Noah: That’s not gonna happen. Just go!
Tommard motions to the two guards to get into the truck while Noah heads back inside Lincoln’s house. Tommard starts up the truck and drives it past the gate. One of the guards slams on the roof
Compound Guard: Stop! We’ve got to close it
Tommard stops the truck and puts it into reverse to the gate. The guard in the bed jumps out and closets it, locking it as he walks back. At that moment, a biter steps out and attacks him, but the guard is able to keep it away and shoot it in the head. He hops back into the bed and they speed off down the windy road. The second guard, Paul looks to Tommard
Paul: You should slow down, Tommard. It’s dark and windy
Tommard: We need to get out of here quickly. You heard the old man
Paul: The old man is an old man. You think he knows if the biters will be on us?
Tommard: I know that idiot firing a gun just now will draw more
As he comes to a curve, the headlights catch a couple deer running through the trees. One stops and stares at the truck. Tommard swerves to avoid it, but swipes the buck on the right. The truck tilts on its side and the guard in the bed jumps out quickly enough before the truck flips on the road. Paul smashes the window and climbs out of the passenger side as the other guard stumbles on over to him
Compound Guard: Where’s Tommard?
Paul: His eyes were shut… C’mon… we can cut through these trees
The pair walk through the trees before they spot a house and a barn in a field
Guard: Paul… we can rest there until morning. Then we can head back
The pair walk up onto the porch and sit on a bench
Paul: Do we head back to Lincoln’s or straight back to the Compound
Compound Guard: Noah’s gonna be pissed either way. Tommard smashed his truck
Paul: I don’t know if Tommard will walk away from that. He looked bad
The pair turn in the direction of the door as they hear a creak. The pair are met with a gun pointed at them and a gruff voice whispering at them
Train: Compound? Is it the O’Connor Compound?
Paul stares down at Train, ignoring the gun aimed at him
Paul: Yes. Why?
Train: So you were following us. What have you learned?
Guard: We weren’t following you. Our truck crashed
Paul: I recognize you. You were at Apex. You probably don’t recognize me
Compound Guard: Paul… stop talking
Paul: I remember your eyes. Filled with tears as I walked out. I was wearing a mask
Train pushes the gun up to Paul’s head
Train: He had a name. It was Aaron
Paul: If you really think I remember, you are crazy. Or an idiot. And you don’t strike me as an idiot. Now please put the gun down and my friend and I will leave
Train complies. Nate calls Train’s name from inside the house, which distracts the latter. Paul reaches for the gun, but Train is quick enough to pull it out of Paul’s reach and shoot him in the chest. He sits back, his mouth open and eyes drooping. Nate runs outside to check on Train
Nate: Who are these people?
Train: They’re from the Compound
Train then brings the gun back up and shoots Paul in the head. He then turns the gun to the pleading guard and fires, killing the other man. The two turn at the sound of twig snapping and see a figure carrying a dead buck over his shoulder. Nate’s eyes widen
Art: What are you two doing in my house?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor: She’s gone…
Richard looks up and at Taylor. He stands up, blinded by the rising Sun, then walks over and checks Kendall for a pulse. There is none. The room is silent, save for a few sobs from people Richard does not know. Richard breathes heavily and pulls out a scalpel and places it in Kendall’s skull. He then turns back to Jenny
Richard: Did she have any family?
Jenny: Just the baby
Richard: Who will watch over him?
Dimitri: Well… we all will. We will collectively take care of it
Tess: We never would have let Kendall take care of him by herself
Richard: Did she give him a name?
Taylor: Bentley
Richard: No middle name?
A silence fills the room again
Richard: What would she choose?
Taylor: Her father’s name was Peter
Janet brings a piece of paper and a pen over to Richard. He walks over to the counter and writes down Bentley Peter Standish and signs the bottom
Richard: What day is today?
Phillip: We have no idea
Richard: If you had to guess. It’s been about a year since the outbreak…
Horatio: October 5th?
Richard writes October 5th on the piece of paper and hands it Elizabeth
Richard: We’ll call that a birth certificate. October fifth… the day this world changed
He sits back down in his chair. Meanwhile, Lewis arrives at a Preschool and Daycare Center and steps out, followed by James Cobalt and Dex. Dex begins to walk around the perimeter. Lewis motions for the group to stay in the cars while thee pair enter
Lewis: A preschool and daycare right next to an elementary school and across the street from a high school? This town really knew how to build
Cobalt: I would have hated this. No change of scenery. You just move across the street. Where’s the excitement in that?
Lewis: Was school really built for excitement?
Cobalt: Yes for learning, but also a development of skills like learning, reasoning, and other of that sort
Lewis: Never saw it like that. I sweep the left, you got the right?
Cobalt: Sure
The pair split off in separate directions. Lewis, watching the sunrise through the windows, fails to notice the gap in the floor. He takes a step and falls in, although is caught by a net before he falls into the deep basement. A hand grabs at him from below, charred and with missing fingernails. He smacks away at it before looking up and seeing a boy, no older than 15, looking down at him
Montana: Hello there, mister.
